NicholasJohn Inc. Wallpaper Hanging Instructions

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR INSTALLATION OF ALL NICHOLASJOHN INC. WALLCOVERING PRODUCTS

Most handwoven wallcoverings have a natural finish, so they may show some shade variations from strip to strip. Natural fibers may contain some irregularities and imperfections in texture, colour and weave. This is a natural, inherent quality of these materials and should not be considered a defect.

CHECK LIST

  1. Order enough material to complete job, as additional material may come from a different batch or dye lot.
  2. Check the wallcovering carefully before hanging. Claims will not be accepted beyond 3 strips.
  3. PLEASE NOTE, NO LABOUR CLAIMS WILL BE HONOURED AT ANY TIME.
  4. Check strips for shading and defects before hanging. After hanging 3 strips, check again for shade variation and defects. If you are not satisfied, stop immediately and contact Primoends before proceeding. All claims must be made within 30 days of the invoice date.

BUILDING & MATERIAL CONDITIONS

The building must be weather-tight with HVAC settings (including pressure, temperature and relative humidity) the same as those of an occupied building for three days prior to, throughout installation, and three days after installation. The walls must be structurally sound including elimination of sources of moisture accumulation in the wall or wall cavity. The wallcovering must be in a clean and dry condition and must be stored at normal occupied building temperature and humidity for at least three days prior to installation. All adhesives and primers must be new, good quality, commercial grade materials, which have not been contaminated.

WALL PREPARATION

Surface must be clean and dry, slightly absorbent and smooth as possible; free from dust, dirt, grease and marks caused by pigmented materials likely to spot through the wallcovering.

  1. For porous surfaces, strip wall surface.
  2. For new plaster, ensure plaster has thoroughly dried before applying wallcoverings.
  3. For painted walls, wash down with Tri Sodium phosphate solution. Any loose paintwork should be removed with a stiff brush. Some water-sensitive paints are softened by reaction to adhesive, a small test area should be tried first. If reaction occurs the whole area should be rubbed down and sealed with oil-based primer sealer.

ADHESIVE

1. We recommend a clear pre-mixed thick adhesive that is suitable for nonwoven backed wallcoverings.

2. Apply the adhesive to the back of the paper, which will become flexible and easy to hang as advised by the adhesive producer’s instruction. Allow the adhesive to become tacky prior to hanging (exact time will vary based on temperature, humidity, etc.)

Under normal conditions, most natural products can be installed by applying the adhesive directly to the wall, so it is not necessary to moisten the back of the wallcovering. However, if kept in storage for a long time, and/or if the installation takes place under very warm weather circumstances, then it is sometimes advisable to first moisten the back of the wallcovering; this will make installation easier.

3. Do not add excessive water to the adhesive as it may cause the backing to pull away from the front.

4. It is important to keep the face of the wallcovering free of adhesive.

INSTALLATION

1. Plumb wall for first strip.

2. Cut strips and allow extra material at the top and bottom for trimming. Hang strips in the same sequence as cut from master roll.

3. Apply wallcovering to wall surface, smoothing out all bubbles with a soft brush or cloth. Do not use wooden or nylon seam roller as this can polish the surface. For vertical strand quality, smooth out bubbles in a direction parallel to the patterns, while paying attention to the fibers on the surface of the wallcoverings.

4. Wallcoverings are pre-trimmed in order to butt the seams together easily for straight match.

HOWEVER, FOR ALL PLAIN TEXTURES WHERE NO PATTERN REPEAT IS SHOWN, IT IS RECOMMENDED TO INSTALL BY OVERLAPPING STRIPS AND TRIM ON THE WALL.

This should be done by a professional hanger to achieve the best result.

5. After cutting the strips from two bolts, take a few minutes to shade the strips from light to dark to ensure the most even shading. The installer may reverse strips if they feel that it will produce the most even shading. Once you are satisfied with the shading from the first two bolts, cut and shade the balance of the rolls.

6. Consider using a light painters tape to cover the edges of previously installed strips, so that the adhesive coming out from the seams will not settle on the installed strips.

IMPORTANT

1. Never allow adhesive or water to get on the front of the material as this may leave permanent marks. Most adhesives will stain.

2. When trimming top and bottom with sharp knife. Blades should be changed frequently to avoid tearing.

3. Because of the irregularities of these natural products, it is not always possible to obtain perfect seams or corners, especially for dark colours. To make the wall surface less visible between the strips, suggest painting the wall in a colour that matches the wallcovering, prior to installation.

MAINTENANCE

1. Lightly brush or vacuum to clean from dust. Sponge with warm water and soap (do not soak).

2. Treat all stains as soon as possible with clean water, using a soft cloth. Try to use a lifting action and avoid the hard rubbing of spots to prevent discoloration. Take special care in cleaning dark colors to avoid leaving “light marks” on the wallcovering.

These instructions are a general guide only, they cannot cover all surfaces and

conditions.

ABACA WALLCOVERINGS

WALL PREPARATION:

The walls to be covered must be properly prepared to insure that the wallpaper will adhere to the wall surface. Even the strongest adhesive can only work when the wall surface is cleanand properly prepared.

PREPARATION:

Before you cut and hang, please be sure you have:

1. The correct wallcovering and the correct amount of wallcovering to finish the job.

2. Inspect the wallcovering carefully to ensure it is free of defects:

If no defect is evident before installation, the material should be inspected after three (3) strips are installed. If any defect is evident at this time (or at any point in the installation) no additional material should be hung until PRIMOENDS is notified.

NO CLAIMS WILL BE ALLOWED FOR MORE THAN (3) STRIPS ON THE WALL.

All claims must be made within 90 days of the invoice date.

No labor claims will be allowed at any time.

BUILDING & MATERIAL CONDITIONS:

INSTALLATION

ADHESIVE

1. We recommend using a clay adhesive.

2. Apply the paste to the back of the paper, which will become flexible and easy to hang.

3. Allow the paste to become tacky prior to hanging (exact time will vary based on temperature, humidity, etc.) Do not add excessive water to the paste as it may cause the backing paper to pull away from the front.

4. It is important to keep the face of the wallcovering free of adhesive.

TRIMMING

1. The edges have been pre-trimmed at the factory. However, you may wish to create your own precision edge on your work table or by making a double cut on the wall for the finest seam possible.

2. Trim edges with a VERY sharp razor blade. CHANGE YOUR BLADES OFTEN.

3. Do not use a seam roller, let seams set up for 6 minutes or so (depending on your surface), then LIGHTLY roll the seams, taking care not to remove underlying adhesive by applying too much pressure. Remove any paste on the surface immediately with a clean sponge dampened in clean water; then blot dry gently with a clean, soft cloth.

4. Avoid cutting narrow widths of material for placement above doors and below windows. Vertical joints should not occur less than six inches from inside or outside corners. If you have to hang a partial width (e.g., into a corner), make sure the joint on the flat wall is made with two pre-trimmed edges; never join the middle of a strip to a pre-trimmed edge. When trimming at chair rails and ceilings, always use a broad knife rather than a straightedge.

HOWEVER, FOR ALL PLAIN TEXTURES WHERE NO PATTERN REPEAT IS SHOWN, IT IS RECOMMENDED TO INSTALL BY OVERLAPPING STRIPS AND TRIM ON THE WALL.

MAINTENANCE

1. Periodic maintenance for Cork wallcoverings should include light dusting or use of a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment. If necessary, a slightly damp cloth may be used to remove a stain, being sure not to soak the material.

2. More stubborn stains can be removed using clear, warm water and a non-abrasive detergent or household cleaner. Test first in an inconspicuous area. Do not use solvent-based cleaning agents, lacquer thinners, nail polish remover, pine oil, or cleaning agents containing bleach, which may cause discoloration over time.

For vertical strand quality, smooth out bubbles in a direction parallel to the patterns, while paying attention to the fibers on the surface of the wallcoverings.

5. Wallcoverings are pre-trimmed in order to butt the seams together easily for straight match.

We recommend this should be done by a Professional Hanger to achieve the best result.

IMPORTANT

1. Natural Raffia is inherently irregular which adds to the natural beauty of the wallcovering. Subtle shading differences between strips tend to soften over time as the Raffia begins to oxidize.

2. Strips should be hung in consecutive order after cutting.

3. Use a soft brush or cloth when hanging, so that you do not damage the face of the wallcovering.

4. Paste, trim and hang one strip at a time. When applying the second panel to the wall, begin by butting the adjoining edge as tightly as possible to the preceding edge - being careful not to overlap or leave gaps along the seam.

5. Perfect seams and shading cannot be guaranteed. If seams are prominent, they should be worked into the architectural treatment. Visually matching each panel will reduce and control this condition.

6. Vertical joints should not occur less than 6” from the outside and inside corners.

7. Consider using a light painters tape to cover the edges of previously installed strips, so that the paste coming out from the seams will not settle on the installed strips.

8. Gently smooth the wallcovering using a plastic smoother. Do not use a seam roller.

MAINTENANCE

Lightly brush or vacuum to clean from dust.

SILK WALLCOVERINGS

WALL PREPARATION:

The walls to be covered must be properly prepared to insure that the wallpaper will adhere to the wall surface. Even the strongest adhesive can only work when the wall surface is clean and properly prepared.

1. The building must be weather-tight with HVAC settings (including pressure, temperature and relative humidity) the same as those of an occupied building for three days prior to, throughout installation and three days after installation.

2. The walls must be structurally sound including elimination of sources of moisture accumulation into the wall or wall cavity.

3. The wallcovering must be in a clean and dry condition and must be stored at normal occupied building temperature and humidity for at least three days prior to installation.

4. All adhesives and primers must be new, good quality, commercial grade materials, which have not been contaminated.

INSTALLATION

ADHESIVE

1. We recommend using a clay adhesive.

2. Apply the paste to the back of the paper, which will become flexible and easy to hang.

3. Do not add excessive water to the paste as it may cause the backing paper to pull away from the front.

TRIMMING

1. The edges have been pre-trimmed at the factory. However, you may wish to create your own precision edge on your work table or by making a double cut on the wall for the finest seam possible.

2. Trim edges with a VERY sharp razor blade. CHANGE YOUR BLADES OFTEN.

INSTALLATION

1. Plumb wall for first strip.

2. Cut strips and allow extra material at the top and bottom for trimming. Hang strips in the same sequence as cut from master roll.

3. After cutting the strips from two bolts, take a few minutes to shade the strips from light to dark to ensure the most even shading. The installer may reverse strips if they feel that it will produce the most even shading. Once you are satisfied with the shading from the first two bolts, cut and shade the balance of the rolls.

4. Apply wallcovering to wall surface, smoothing out all bubbles with a soft brush or cloth.

5. Do not use wooden or nylon seam roller as this can polish the surface.

6. For vertical strand quality, smooth out bubbles in a direction parallel to the patterns, while paying attention to the fibers on the surface of the wallcoverings.

IMPORTANT

1. DO NOT FOLD this wallcovering while pasting or booking, as it is susceptible to potential wrinkling and creasing.

2. Use a soft brush or cloth when hanging, so that you do not damage the face of the wallcovering.

3. DO NOT allow paste or excessive water to stain the front of the wallcovering.

4. The SILK wallcoverings have a natural finish and may show some shade variation from strip to strip. As the wallcovering oxidize, these variations should soften over time.

5. Paste, trim and hang one strip at a time.

6. Gently smooth the wallcovering using a plastic smoother. Do not use a seam roller.

MAINTENANCE

Lightly brush or vacuum to clean from dust.

IMPORTANT

1. Use a soft brush or cloth when hanging, so that you do not damage the face of the wallcovering.

2. DO NOT allow paste or excessive water to stain the front of the wallcovering. Both paste and excessive water will change the color of the natural sisal on the face of the paper.

3. After cutting the strips from two bolts, take a few minutes to shade the strips from light to dark to ensure the most even shading. The installer may reverse strips if they feel that it will produce the most even shading. Once you are satisfied with the shading from the first two bolts, cut and shade the balance of the rolls.

4. Paste, trim and hang one strip at a time.

5. Gently smooth the wallcovering using a plastic smoother. Do not use a seam roller.

6. Subtle shading differences between strips tend to soften over time as the Sisal begins to oxidize.

MAINTENANCE

1. Wallcovering may be cleaned using a soft brush attachment of a vacuum cleaner.

2. A damp cloth may be used but be sure NOT to soak the material.

IMPORTANT

1. Do not Fold or Crinkle, as this will leave a permanent mark. Instead, we recommend loosely rolling the wallcovering, being careful not to crease.

2. Roll out SUEDE bolts the night prior to installation. This will allow time for any lines from the bolt impression to smooth out.

3. A horsehair billiards brush is best for smooth it out.

4. The material may shade at time of installation, but will oxidize and soften over time.

5. The nap of the material should be installed in the downward direction.

6. Use a soft brush or cloth when hanging, as to not damage the face of the wallcovering.

7. DO NOT allow paste or excessive water to stain the front of the wallcovering.

8. Both paste and excessive water will change the color on the face of the paper.

9. Paste, trim and hang one strip at a time.

10. We have found that hanging the SUEDE wallcoverings in the same direction, without reversing the strips, has produced the most even shading. The direction of the nap should be smoothed down. DO NOT REVERSE THE STRIPS.

11. Gently smooth the wallcovering using a plastic smoother. Do not use a seam roller.

MAINTENANCE

SUEDE wallcoverings can be cleaned using a soft brush attachment of a vacuum cleaner.

WOOD VENEER WALLCOVERINGS

WALL PREPARATION:

The walls to be covered must be properly prepared to insure that the wallpaper will adhere to the wall surface. Even the strongest adhesive can only work when the wall surface is clean and properly prepared.

PREPARATION:

Before you cut and hang, please be sure you have:

1. The correct wallcovering and the correct amount of wallcovering to finish the job.

2. Be sure all material has the same run lot number before installation. Final inspection should be made as to correct pattern, color and any defects in craftsmanship.

1. The building must be weather-tight with HVAC settings (including pressure, temperature and relative humidity) the same as those of an occupied building for three days prior to, throughout installation, and three days after installation.

Allow the paste to become tacky prior to hanging (exact time will vary based on temperature, humidity, etc.)

3. Paste one piece at a time.

4. DO NOT get paste on the face of the wallcovering. If paste does accidentally get on the face of the wallcovering, blot off excess paste immediately with a soft, moist rag and dry with a dry towel.

5. Do not scrub or rub. When wiping this material, there will be a slight residue of the finish that will come off. Therefore, minimal wiping is suggested so the finish of the wallcovering is not altered.

BOOKING

1. Be sure to book the wallcovering loosely to avoid creasing or splitting of the wood veneer. DO NOT FOLD this wallcovering while pasting or booking, as its susceptible to potential wrinkling and creasing. When booking, leave booked ends well rounded.

2. We have found it is helpful to slightly moisten the back of the material with a damp cloth. Please be sure not to fully saturate the product. Dampening the back of FLOORED aids in ensuring the product lays flat and adheres to the wall properly.

TRIMMING

1. The edges have been pre-trimmed at the factory. However, you may wish to create your own precision edge on your work table or by making a double cut on the wall for the finest seam possible.

2. Trim edges with a VERY sharp razor blade. CHANGE YOUR BLADES OFTEN.

MATCHING

FLOORED creates the effect of a random pattern of horizontal lines and is therefore a random match.

IMPORTANT

1. This is a special natural wood product and special care should be taken when installing.

2. DO NOT allow paste or excessive water to stain the front of the wallcovering. Both paste and excessive water will change the color of the wood veneer on the face of the paper.

3. We suggest using a template or pre-cut the material for corners, ceiling, baseboards, door frames etc. However, we leave this to the wallpaper installers discretion. Trim edges with a VERY sharp razor blade. Change your blades often.

4. Use strips in the exact order as they are cut from roll. Paste one piece at a time. Subtle shading differences between strips tend to soften over time as the wallcovering begins to oxidize. Do not reverse.

5. Gently smooth the wallcovering using a plastic smoother. Do not use a seam roller.

6. When unpacking material you may see it does not lay flat. DO NOT BACK ROLL the material, as it will relax once pasted. Back rolling may cause stressing of the appliques.

MAINTENANCE

Wallcoverings may be cleaned using a soft brush attachment of a vacuum cleaner.
